Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal – The Poet of the East and Visionary Thinker

Written by Basharat Mosvi

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was one of the most influential poets, philosophers, and political thinkers of the Muslim world. Through his poetry and intellectual work, he inspired millions of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent to rediscover their identity, dignity, and purpose. Because of his profound ideas and powerful poetic style, he is widely known as the “Poet of the East.” Iqbal’s thoughts played an important role in awakening the Muslim community and shaping the idea that later led to the creation of Pakistan.

Early Life and Family Background

Dr. Muhammad Iqbal was born on November 9, 1877, in Sialkot, a historic city in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent (now in Pakistan). He belonged to a religious and respectable Kashmiri family.

His father, Sheikh Noor Muhammad, was a deeply spiritual and humble man. Although he did not have extensive formal education, he possessed great wisdom and strong religious values. He encouraged his son to seek knowledge and develop a deep connection with faith and morality.

Iqbal’s mother, Imam Bibi, was known for her kindness and compassion. She had a caring personality and was respected by people in the neighborhood. The nurturing environment at home helped shape Iqbal’s character and influenced his intellectual and spiritual development.

Education and Academic Excellence

Iqbal began his early education at a local school in Sialkot. His remarkable intelligence soon became evident to his teachers. After completing his basic schooling, he enrolled at Murray College in Sialkot, where he passed his intermediate examinations.

Later, he moved to Lahore to pursue higher education at Government College Lahore, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the region. There he studied philosophy, literature, and Arabic, and completed his Master’s degree in Philosophy with outstanding performance.

Because of his academic brilliance, he was appointed as a lecturer in philosophy at Government College Lahore shortly after finishing his studies.

Higher Studies in Europe

Iqbal’s passion for knowledge encouraged him to continue his studies abroad. In 1905, he traveled to England to further his education.

During his stay in Europe:

He studied law at Cambridge University.

He qualified as a Barrister-at-Law.

He later moved to Germany and completed his Doctorate (PhD) from the University of Munich.

His doctoral thesis focused on Persian philosophy, which reflected his deep interest in Islamic intellectual traditions. While living in Europe, Iqbal carefully studied Western philosophy, politics, and culture. This experience broadened his perspective and strengthened his determination to uplift the Muslim world intellectually and spiritually.

Career and Literary Contributions

After completing his studies, Iqbal returned to India and started practicing law. However, his true passion was literature, philosophy, and poetry. Gradually, he devoted most of his time to writing and intellectual work.

Iqbal wrote poetry in both Urdu and Persian, and his works are admired for their depth, beauty, and powerful message.

Some of his most famous books include:

Bang-e-Dara

Bal-e-Jibril

Asrar-e-Khudi (Secrets of the Self)

Rumuz-e-Bekhudi

Payam-e-Mashriq

Zarb-e-Kalim

In these works, Iqbal emphasized important ideas such as self-respect, spiritual awakening, unity, and intellectual growth. His concept of “Khudi” (selfhood) encouraged individuals to recognize their inner strength and develop confidence and independence.

Role in Awakening the Muslim Community

During the early twentieth century, the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent were facing political, social, and economic challenges. Iqbal’s poetry provided them with hope and inspiration.

Through his philosophical verses, he reminded Muslims of their glorious past and encouraged them to work towards a better future. His writings emphasized courage, faith, and determination.

Because of his powerful message, Iqbal became a source of inspiration for people across the subcontinent.

Political Vision and the Idea of Pakistan

In addition to being a poet and philosopher, Iqbal also played an active role in politics. He believed that Muslims needed political strength and unity in order to protect their cultural and religious identity.

He served as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and participated in the Round Table Conferences in London, where important constitutional discussions about the future of India took place.

In 1930, Iqbal delivered a historic presidential address at the Allahabad session of the All-India Muslim League. In this speech, he presented the idea that Muslims should have a separate state where they could live according to their own values and traditions.

This vision later became the foundation for the creation of Pakistan in 1947.

Final Years and Death

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal spent the last years of his life continuing his literary and intellectual work despite declining health. He passed away on April 21, 1938, in Lahore.

Although he did not live to see the creation of Pakistan, his dream became a reality nine years after his death, when Pakistan emerged as an independent nation in 1947.

Today, Iqbal is remembered as the spiritual father of Pakistan, and his poetry continues to inspire people across the world.

Message of Allama Iqbal

Iqbal’s philosophy encourages people to develop self-respect, serve humanity, and remain spiritually connected to their Creator. His poetry promotes courage, dignity, and love for humanity.

One of the famous ideas reflected in his poetry is that true devotion to God is shown through kindness and service to fellow human beings.

Conclusion

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was not only a great poet but also a visionary thinker whose ideas transformed the intellectual and political landscape of the Muslim world. His poetry continues to inspire generations to strive for knowledge, unity, and self-respect.

Even today, Iqbal’s message reminds us that nations rise through education, faith, determination, and strong moral values.
